A clear comparison
The Ordinary Marine Hyaluronics vs Hyaluronic Acid: which fits dry skin?
Compare Marine Hyaluronics with the current Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 with Ceramides, including texture, ingredients and when neither adds value.

At a glance
Choose Marine Hyaluronics if your main buying reason is an exceptionally light hydration layer. Choose Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (with Ceramides) if you specifically want the current formula’s hyaluronic acid, panthenol and barrier-supporting ingredients. If moisturizer already keeps your face comfortable, skip both. Neither is a required menopause product.
This is a researched comparison of current US manufacturer information, not a personal wear test. We have not compared stickiness, measured hydration or tested either under makeup.

Check which hyaluronic acid bottle you mean
The Ordinary still lists a separately sold Original Formulation. Older comparisons may describe that richer serum. They do not establish how the current with Ceramides version feels. Read the complete name on the box before buying a bottle because a reviewer found the old one sticky.
| Buying question | Marine Hyaluronics | HA 2% + B5 with Ceramides |
|---|---|---|
| Main formula idea | Marine-derived humectants | Hyaluronic acid and panthenol, with added barrier-supporting ingredients |
| Manufacturer texture description | Exceptionally lightweight | Lightweight and non-tacky compared with Original |
| Contains hyaluronic acid? | Not in its published ingredient list | Yes |
| Best reason to shortlist | You dislike substantial serum layers | You want this specific updated hydration formula |
| Still needs moisturizer? | Yes, if your skin needs one | Yes, if your skin needs one |
These distinctions come from the Marine Hyaluronics listing and current HA with Ceramides listing. Texture descriptions are brand claims, not our measured results.
Ingredient differences that change the decision
| Selected ingredient group | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Marine: glycerin, algae-derived ingredients, amino acids, PCA and sodium lactate | A different humectant blend; “hyaluronics” does not mean this contains HA |
| Marine: salicylic acid in the list | Does not by itself establish an acne treatment, exfoliating strength or peel |
| Current HA: hyaluronic acid and panthenol | A conventional hydration-focused shortlist |
| Current HA: manufacturer-described ceramides | A formula distinction, not proof it replaces your cream |
Pluses, minuses and fit
Marine Hyaluronics
- Plus: a plausible choice when you want a very light extra layer.
- Plus: lets you choose hydration without choosing an HA serum.
- Minus: its marine ingredients do not establish superior hydration.
- Minus: a watery serum may leave very dry skin wanting a separate cream.
HA with Ceramides
- Plus: a clear option if you deliberately want HA and panthenol.
- Plus: the updated version can be evaluated separately from Original.
- Minus: the brand’s non-tacky description cannot guarantee your makeup layers will behave well.
- Minus: buying it alongside another HA serum duplicates the same routine job.
How to use one without expanding the routine
Both manufacturers direct a few drops morning and evening on unbroken skin and advise patch testing. Start with one product so you can identify whether it adds comfort or irritation. Follow with your usual moisturizer when needed; use sunscreen in the morning. Stop if it irritates rather than adding another serum to compensate.
AAD’s menopause skin guidance supports mild cleansing, moisturizer and sun protection. It does not require a marine or HA serum. Persistent dryness despite practical care deserves a dermatologist’s advice.
Questions before buying
Is The Ordinary Marine Hyaluronics good?
It is a reasonable researched option for someone who wants its light humectant layer. “Good” depends on whether it improves your routine without discomfort. We cannot assign a universal winner or promise a plumping result.
What is the most hydrating serum from The Ordinary?
We have no independent head-to-head hydration measurements that rank every serum. Choose by the current formula and routine gap, rather than treating the number of HA forms as a performance score.
Can I use both together?
You can avoid the extra purchase: begin with one. For more options and the separate Original formulation, see our hydrating serum guide.
