Best fragrance-free moisturizer for menopausal dry skin: 23 labels checked

At a glance

If menopause has left your skin dry and quick to sting, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is the fragrance-free cream to start with. It works on face and body, and its US ingredient list has no fragrance entry. For a lighter face cream, choose La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair. For very dry skin, choose La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+MAX Triple Repair.

Many creams that appear in search results and beauty lists for menopausal skin do list fragrance, including several sold as menopause products. We read the current ingredient lists of 23 creams on October 19, 2026. Eight list fragrance or parfum, and one more is scented with rose oil.

On this page
  • Fragrance-free is the safer starting filter for reactive skin. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises a fragrance-free moisturizer if menopausal skin becomes easily irritated.
  • “Unscented” is not the same thing. The AAD’s dry-skin advice says unscented products can contain chemicals that mask odors.
  • A menopause label does not mean fragrance-free. All three menopause-branded or menopause-marketed creams in our check list fragrance.
  • Read the package you buy. Formulas change and differ by country.
  • Burning, a rash or itch that will not settle needs a clinician. No cream treats a skin condition.

Each status comes from the full ingredient list on the brand’s own US page, read on October 19, 2026, unless the row says otherwise. “No fragrance listed” means no fragrance or parfum entry appears in that list. It does not promise that a product will suit your skin.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment No fragrance listed Ointment Brand says fragrance-free; very greasy
Olay Retinol 24 MAX Night Moisturizer No fragrance listed Retinol night cream The online list looks incomplete, so check the box; retinol can dry and irritate skin

A “No fragrance listed” product can still smell of its raw ingredients, and plant oils such as rose oil can scent a product without a fragrance entry. If a clinician has given you a list of allergens to avoid, check every ingredient against it, not just the word fragrance.

Best for
Dry face and body when a lotion is not enough
Time of day
Day or night
Fragrance
None listed; brand says fragrance-free (checked US formula)
Watch out for
No niacinamide; how it sits under makeup varies

It combines humectants that draw in water, ceramides and occlusives that slow water loss in one jar, and CeraVe directs it for face and body. One cream for both is the simplest way to cut the number of products touching reactive skin. Compare it with Vanicream in our CeraVe versus Vanicream guide.

Best light face cream

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair: light fragrance-free face cream

Key ingredients
Glycerin, niacinamide, dimethicone, ceramide NP, squalane
Best for
A simple daily face cream under sunscreen
Time of day
Day or night
Fragrance
None listed; brand says fragrance-free
Watch out for
No SPF; the UV and Matte versions are different products

Choose it when CeraVe feels too heavy on your face. It contains niacinamide, which some people with very reactive skin prefer to introduce slowly. Our Double Repair review covers who it suits.

Richest cream

La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+MAX Triple Repair: for very dry skin

Key ingredients
Glycerin, shea butter, niacinamide, ceramide NP, rapeseed oil
Best for
Very dry or tight face and body skin
Time of day
Morning or night

Simplest formula

Key ingredients
Petrolatum, sorbitol; propylene glycol also present
Best for
Readers who want few ingredients and no botanicals
Time of day
Follow the label
Fragrance
Brand says free of fragrance and masking fragrance
Watch out for
Propylene glycol; a short list does not guarantee tolerance

Vanicream’s page says the formula has no masking fragrance, the hidden kind the AAD warns about in unscented products. Buy a small size first. Our fragrance-free versus unscented guide uses its label as a worked example.

Fragrance-free swap

Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream Fragrance Free: if you want the Olay cream

Key ingredients
Glycerin, niacinamide, panthenol, peptides, dimethicone
Best for
Readers drawn to the original Olay cream who want to avoid fragrance
Time of day
Day or night
Fragrance
None listed; the original version lists fragrance
Watch out for
Two jars with nearly the same name; check the words "Fragrance Free" on the box

The original Micro-Sculpting Cream is often recommended for menopausal skin, and its ingredient list includes fragrance. Olay sells a fragrance-free version with the same base. Peptides are marketed for firmness, but our peptide evidence guide explains why the proof is limited. Manufacturer page.

Why fragrance matters more around menopause

Falling estrogen leaves skin holding less water, and the AAD’s menopause guidance says skin can also become easily irritated. Dry, irritated skin is more likely to sting when something new goes on it. That is why the AAD’s dry-skin advice lists fragrance and alcohol among the ingredients to stop using on very dry skin.

The FDA names fragrances as one of five classes of common cosmetic allergens. It also explains that fragrance ingredients may be listed simply as “fragrance” or “perfume”, so the label does not show which compounds are inside. Choosing fragrance-free removes that unknown. The same FDA page notes that “fragrance-free” has no federal definition in the US, which is why reading the ingredient list matters more than the front of the box. Our guide on why skin gets dry after menopause covers the rest of the cause.

How to read a label in 30 seconds

  1. Find the exact product name. Many creams come in fragranced and fragrance-free versions, as Olay’s does.
  2. Scan the full ingredient list for fragrance, parfum or aroma. It is usually near the end.
  3. Look for scent oils and named allergens. Rose oil, citrus peel oil, limonene, linalool and geraniol all appear on the FDA’s list of fragrance allergens.
  4. Treat “unscented” as a reason to keep reading. The FDA says unscented products may contain fragrance added to mask other smells.
  5. Match the package to the online list. If they differ, trust the package in your hand.

How to use it on dry, reactive skin

  • Apply to damp skin. The AAD advises applying moisturizer while skin is still damp after washing or bathing.
  • Change one product at a time. If a new cream stings, you will know which one caused it.
  • Use sunscreen separately by day. None of the picks above contains SPF. Our sunscreens for dry skin page compares options.
  • Stop a product that burns or causes a rash, and tell a clinician if it does not settle.

Questions before buying

What is the best fragrance-free moisturizer for menopausal dry skin?

For most women, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream: it lists no fragrance, combines glycerin, ceramides and petrolatum, and works on face and body. Choose La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair for a lighter face cream, or Lipikar AP+MAX Triple Repair if your skin is very dry.

Are menopause skincare creams fragrance-free?

Not always. In our October 2026 check, the Vichy Neovadiol Post-Menopause Day Cream, the No7 Menopause Skincare Nourishing Overnight Cream and PrimePrometics Miracle Cream all list fragrance. A menopause label tells you who the product is marketed to, not what is in it.

Is Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream fragrance-free?

The original version is not: its US ingredient list includes fragrance. Olay sells a separate Micro-Sculpting Cream Fragrance Free with no fragrance listed. Check the box before you buy.

Is CeraVe fragrance-free?

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream lists no fragrance and CeraVe calls it fragrance-free. CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion is described as free of added fragrance. Check each CeraVe product separately, since the range is large.

Do I need a different cream for my body?

Not necessarily. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, Vanicream Moisturizing Cream and Lipikar AP+MAX are all directed for face and body. Our body lotions for menopause page covers lighter options for large areas.

When should I see a clinician?

See one if dryness continues after a few weeks of a plain fragrance-free routine, or if you have burning, a rash or itch that will not settle. The AAD says very dry skin can be linked to conditions such as eczema or psoriasis that need treatment.

How these were checked

We read the full ingredient list of each cream on the brand’s US page on October 19, 2026, using the brand’s other-country page or a retailer page only where the row says so. One identification from an earlier search result could not be confirmed, so it was left out. Fragrance status decided inclusion among the picks; commission, menopause branding and star ratings did not. Texture, comfort and itch relief have not been measured for this page. For more picks, including richer and night options, see our full best moisturizer for menopausal dry skin guide.
