For dry skin beneath makeup, start by comparing one suitable moisturizer within your actual sunscreen and foundation routine. Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer is our first researched facial candidate. CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion is a multipurpose lotion alternative. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is the richer option when comfort is the more pressing issue.
This is a formula shortlist, not a wear-test ranking. We have not personally tested these products under makeup, and cannot call any of them pill-proof or promise a smooth foundation finish. Keep your existing moisturizer if it already leaves your skin comfortable and your layers work together.

Three candidates, three different reasons to try one
| Product | Reason to consider it | What we know | What still needs your own assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer | Dedicated facial lotion | Squalane, glycerin and ceramides; day/night directions | Finish beneath your sunscreen and foundation |
| CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion | One lotion for face and body | Glycerin, dimethicone and ceramides; face/body directions | Whether this format supplies enough moisture |
| CeraVe Moisturizing Cream | A cream alternative when lotion is insufficient | Petrolatum, glycerin and ceramides; face/body directions | Whether a richer cream fits the daytime layers you use |
What the shortlist can responsibly tell you
The selection follows your skin’s comfort needs, exact formula and intended use. We checked the full current US ingredient lists and directions on October 3, 2026. All are fragrance-free options without retinol or an exfoliating active as their main job. We chose alternatives with meaningful format differences, rather than a long list of almost interchangeable names.
The AAD’s menopause guidance supports gentle care and moisturizer for dryness. That establishes the ordinary care direction. It does not prove that a particular moisturizer extends foundation wear or corrects visible flakes beneath makeup.
A manufacturer’s makeup claim is useful context, but it remains a brand claim unless we test it. Formula research cannot account for your foundation amount, application method, sunscreen film or skin condition. This is why the practical evaluation below matters more than a confident-sounding universal winner.
Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer: the dedicated facial candidate
The current Vanicream formula contains squalane, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and five ceramides. Directions allow application as needed day or night. The manufacturer describes it as suitable beneath makeup, but we have not independently verified that performance.
This is our first candidate if you want a facial product and do not currently need a richer face/body cream. It lets you compare a moisturizer with your existing makeup without introducing a serum and primer at the same time. That keeps the trial understandable: you changed one step.
Its limitation is that a lotion may not meet your dryness needs. If you find yourself adding several hydration layers just to make the routine comfortable, reconsider whether the moisturizer itself is sufficient. The presence of hyaluronic acid is not proof that an additional hyaluronic serum would solve the problem.
Try it for: a dedicated facial formula with daytime directions. Do not buy it for: an assumed guarantee about foundation wear.
CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion: the multipurpose option
The CeraVe listing contains glycerin, dimethicone, three ceramides and sodium hyaluronate. Its instructions allow face and body use. This is the ordinary Daily Moisturizing Lotion, without SPF, rather than AM or PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion.
The practical benefit is consolidating products if you want one suitable lotion for several areas. You might already own it for your body, in which case confirming its facial directions and your tolerance is more useful than buying another product from an under-makeup list.
The drawback is that multipurpose convenience does not establish makeup performance or sufficient moisture for your face. A lotion that works on your arms may not be your preferred facial format. If you try it, keep your foundation, sunscreen and application method consistent so you can judge the actual change.
Try it for: a simple face/body lotion decision. Keep another product when: it already provides the comfort and compatibility you need.
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream: when daytime comfort needs a cream comparison
The cream’s current ingredient list includes petrolatum, glycerin, dimethicone and three ceramides. It has face/body and day/night directions. Unlike the lotion above, petrolatum is part of this checked cream formula.
Consider it when the problem is that lotion leaves your face uncomfortable, rather than assuming all foundation problems arise from insufficient primer. A cream may be a more purposeful comparison than adding several thinner products. You may also be able to use the same cream in the evening, reducing duplicate purchases.
Its limitation is the richer format. We cannot say whether you will like it under your daytime layers, whether it alters shine or whether your foundation lasts longer over it. Do not turn a dry-skin recommendation into a tested cosmetic claim.
Try it for: a different moisturizing format when lotion is inadequate. Choose differently when: you dislike how it fits your own daytime routine.
A useful compatibility check at home
First assess the skin without foundation. If your face feels sore, burns or has a rash, a new makeup base is not the main decision. Get persistent or worsening symptoms checked. If the issue is ordinary dryness, change one moisturizer while keeping the rest of the routine steady.
Then apply your usual sunscreen as its label directs. Do not reduce the amount to avoid pilling or mix it into cream. Once you have applied the skincare normally, use your usual foundation and note what happens: visible dry patches, rolling product, slipping coverage or simple preference for the finish. Those are different observations and may have different solutions.
Make a short note of the exact products, amounts and order. Compare a few ordinary uses instead of changing every step after one disappointing application. There is no universal waiting time or ingredient-pairing rule that can substitute for checking your actual combination. If your current products work together, there is no requirement to replace them with an item from this shortlist.
Questions about moisturizer beneath makeup
Does a silicone ingredient mean it will pill?
No. The presence of one ingredient cannot establish the behavior of a finished formula or the whole layer combination. We do not use silicone-versus-water slogans to predict wear.
Should I exfoliate away flakes before makeup?
Do not respond to sore or persistently dry skin by scrubbing harder. The AAD dry-skin advice prioritizes gentle care, and its menopause guidance advises clinician input before exfoliation for persistent dryness.
Do I need a hydration serum and a primer too?
Not automatically. Begin with the simplest combination that leaves your skin comfortable and delivers sunscreen protection. Extra layers should solve a specific problem you can observe.
Is an SPF moisturizer enough beneath foundation?
It can be if used correctly and suitable for your skin. Foundation does not change the need to follow the sunscreen label or provide a reason to apply less.
Next steps and sources
For visible flakes, use the flaky foundation checklist. For rolling product, read skincare pilling under SPF. To choose the protection step, compare sunscreens for dry skin.
