At a glance
A morning routine for menopausal skin has three steps: wash gently, moisturize, then protect with sunscreen. For each step, use CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer and Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30. A vitamin C serum is an optional fourth step, not a requirement.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises a fragrance-free moisturizer if menopausal skin becomes easily irritated, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day on skin that clothing does not cover. None of the products below lists fragrance. Keep anything you already own that does the same job comfortably; the routine matters more than the brand.

The morning routine at a glance
| Step | Product | Why it is here | Can you skip it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Cleanse | CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser | Non-foaming; glycerin, three ceramides and hyaluronic acid | Keep a gentle cleanser you already own instead |
| 2. Serum (optional) | Vanicream Vitamin C Serum | Fragrance-free vitamin C derivative with ceramides | Yes; skip it if your skin stings or the routine already feels like too much |
| 3. Moisturize | La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair | Light, fragrance-free; niacinamide and ceramide NP | Yes, if the SPF moisturizer alone keeps your face comfortable |
| 4. Protect | Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 | Mineral sunscreen with glycerin, squalane and ceramides | No, not on any day you go outside |
Cleanser
Step 1: Cleanse with CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
- Key ingredients
- Glycerin, three ceramides, hyaluronic acid
- Best for
- Normal to dry skin that feels tight after foaming washes
- Fragrance
- None listed; the brand says fragrance-free
- Watch out for
- Labelled for normal to dry skin; an oily T-zone may prefer a foaming wash
CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a creamy wash that does not foam. The AAD’s face-washing guidance suggests washing twice a day and after sweating, with lukewarm water, and patting skin dry. One bottle covers the morning and the night. More options are in our gentle cleansers guide.
Optional serum
Step 2 (optional): Vanicream Vitamin C Serum
- Key ingredients
- Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (a vitamin C derivative), ceramides
- Best for
- Readers who want an antioxidant step and have calm skin
- Fragrance
- None; the tube says free of fragrance and masking fragrance
- Watch out for
- A derivative, not pure vitamin C; brightening claims are uncertain
Vanicream Vitamin C Serum is a milky, fragrance-free serum in a 1.2 fl oz tube, made for sensitive skin. Vanicream’s FAQ recommends it once a day, morning or evening. Add it last, after the other steps feel comfortable, and patch test first as the AAD product-testing guidance describes. Our Vanicream Vitamin C review covers what it can and cannot do.
Moisturizer
Step 3: Moisturize with La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair
- Key ingredients
- Glycerin, niacinamide, dimethicone, ceramide NP
- Best for
- A light daily face cream that sits well under sunscreen
- Fragrance
- None listed; the brand says fragrance-free
- Watch out for
- No SPF; may not be rich enough for very dry patches
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer is light enough for the morning. Apply it while your skin is still slightly damp from cleansing. If your face still feels tight by midday, use a richer cream from our moisturizers for menopausal dry skin instead.
Sunscreen
Step 4: Protect with Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30
- Key ingredients
- Zinc oxide 19.5%; glycerin, squalane, ceramides
- Best for
- Daily face use when moisture and sun protection should share one step
- Fragrance
- None listed; the brand says fragrance-free
- Watch out for
- May leave a white cast; not water resistant
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is a mineral sunscreen built on a moisturizing base. The AAD’s application guidance says to apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outdoors and to reapply every two hours outside. Our sunscreens for menopausal dry skin page compares other options.
Premium option
Premium option: EltaMD UV Skin Recovery SPF 50
EltaMD UV Skin Recovery Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is a fragrance-free mineral sunscreen with 12.9% zinc oxide, glycerin, taurine and centella asiatica, labelled for sensitive skin. It is a premium alternative, not a better one: choose it if you prefer SPF 50 or want a different finish. Downsides: it costs more and it is not water resistant.
The order to apply it
- Wash with lukewarm water and the cleanser; pat dry, leaving the skin slightly damp.
- Serum, if you use one.
- Moisturizer.
- Sunscreen last, about 15 minutes before you go out. The AAD’s application-order advice ends the routine with moisturizer and sunscreen.
A two-product morning
If three or four steps feel like too much, use the cleanser and Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 only. It moisturizes and protects in one step. Add the separate moisturizer back if your skin feels tight by afternoon.
What to leave out in the morning
- Retinol. It belongs in the night routine.
- Scrubs and exfoliating acids, if your skin has become dry or sensitive.
- Several new products at once. Add one at a time, so you can tell which one stings.
Questions before buying
What order should I apply morning skincare in?
Cleanser, then serum if you use one, then moisturizer, then sunscreen last. Sunscreen goes on about 15 minutes before you go outdoors.
Do I need a vitamin C serum in the morning?
No. It is optional. Cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen cover the basics for menopausal skin. Add vitamin C only once those feel comfortable and you want an antioxidant step.
Can a moisturizer with SPF replace two products?
Often, yes. Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 is a moisturizer and a sunscreen in one. Use a separate moisturizer underneath only if your skin still feels dry.
Should I wash my face in the morning?
The AAD suggests washing twice a day. A creamy, non-foaming cleanser like CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser keeps the morning wash gentle on dry skin.
When should I see a clinician?
See one if burning, a rash or itch does not settle after you stop a new product, or if dryness continues after a few weeks of a simple routine. A product is not a treatment for a skin condition.
How these were chosen
Each product is a pick from our own cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen guides, chosen for menopausal skin that is dry or easily irritated. Ingredient and fragrance details come from each brand’s US product page; the cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen were checked in October 2026, and the serum on October 26, 2026. These are researched picks, not personal testing. Commission did not decide the picks; the premium option is labelled as one.
