A clear comparison
CeraVe Healing Ointment vs Moisturizing Cream: which job do you need?
Compare the exact US CeraVe ointment and cream for body dryness: petrolatum, ingredients, application order and when an extra protective layer is unnecessary.

At a glance
Choose CeraVe Moisturizing Cream for an ordinary face-and-body moisturizing step. Consider Healing Ointment when you specifically want its petrolatum-based protective layer for selected dry areas, following its label. You do not automatically need both. A comfortable existing cream is a reason to keep the routine short.
This researched comparison covers the current US products, without personal testing. Neither is proven here to work better specifically during menopause. The question is whether your current body-care routine needs a cream, an additional protective layer, or clinical assessment.

Sources are the current Healing Ointment page and Moisturizing Cream page, checked October 8, 2026. The ointment’s skin-protectant labelling and the cream’s cosmetic use are different; their names do not make them interchangeable.
Ingredients: both contain petrolatum
Healing Ointment identifies petrolatum 46.5% as its active skin protectant and also lists ceramides and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid. Moisturizing Cream lists petrolatum alongside glycerin, dimethicone, ceramides and sodium hyaluronate, without stating a petrolatum percentage. The difference is the finished formula and its intended job, not petrolatum versus no petrolatum.
Pluses and minuses of each choice
Moisturizing Cream
- Plus: a straightforward moisturizing step for the face and body.
- Plus: useful when you prefer one tolerated general cream over several specialist containers.
- Minus: if selected areas stay uncomfortable, repeatedly applying cream may not resolve the underlying issue.
- Minus: we have not assessed its finish under clothes, sunscreen or makeup.
Healing Ointment
- Plus: a clearly labelled protective product with a disclosed petrolatum percentage.
- Plus: its application instructions distinguish it from the preceding moisturizing step.
- Minus: buying it adds cost and another tolerance question if your cream already works.
- Minus: a protective layer cannot diagnose persistent cracking, irritation or a rash.
How to decide without buying both by default
Start with the uncomfortable area. If ordinary body moisture is the job, compare the cream with your existing lotion or cream. If one limited area needs more protection and the ointment label fits that use, consider the ointment there rather than assuming your whole body needs it.
AAD advice for dry-skin care supports creams or ointments for dry skin and applying moisturizer after washing. It does not rank these exact products or establish a requirement to layer them.
Review the wash as well: a new product is less informative when an excessively hot shower or irritating cleanser remains part of the routine. For ordinary lotion choices, use our body-lotion comparison.
Questions before buying
Should Healing Ointment go before or after moisturizer?
The current manufacturer directions say a thin layer after cleansing and moisturizing. Follow the label on your own package and any clinician-directed care plan.
Is Healing Ointment basically Vaseline?
It is a petrolatum-based skin protectant with additional ingredients. That makes it different from a single-ingredient petrolatum product; it does not prove the additions improve your results.
Can I use the ointment instead of moisturizer?
Do not assume it is an equivalent replacement for your general cream. Its manufacturer instructions place it after moisturizing. Decide whether you need that specific protective use rather than swapping products by brand name.
What about persistent dry or cracked skin?
Seek a qualified clinician when symptoms persist, worsen, or involve a lasting rash. AAD guidance for menopausal skin care cannot turn timing alone into a diagnosis. Neither shopping choice replaces assessment.
