The list starts with water, a silicone powder, glycerin and niacinamide, followed by emollients, stearyl alcohol and palmitoyl pentapeptide-4. Lower down come titanium dioxide, iron oxides, benzyl alcohol, methylparaben, propylparaben and ethylparaben, plus more silicones and fatty alcohols.

• Tint (titanium dioxide, iron oxides): these are the color in the cream. Olay says it “acts as a touch of concealer”. That is why the change is instant, and why it washes off at night.
• Niacinamide: a moisturizing, barrier-supporting ingredient that Olay uses across the range. The amount is not published.

• Glycerin and silicones: draw in water and give the smooth, quick-setting feel.
• No fragrance, no retinol: fewer reasons for the eye area to sting than with a scented or retinol eye cream.
• Parabens and benzyl alcohol: common preservatives. If you avoid parabens or have reacted to benzyl alcohol before, this is not your cream.

Dark circles after 50: what a cream can do

Cleveland Clinic names aging as one of the most common causes of dark circles: the skin under the eyes loosens and thins, so the blood vessels underneath show more, and hollows can cast shadows. Its suggestions include under-eye concealer, and it says to see a healthcare provider if you want lasting removal.

That is the honest frame for this product. A tinted eye cream can make thin, shadowed under-eye skin look more even during the day. It does not rebuild the skin or fill a hollow. If your circles are mostly shadow from a hollow, no cream changes that.

Is Olay Ultimate Eye Cream good for mature skin?

It may suit you if:

• under-eye darkness bothers you more than dryness, and you would otherwise reach for concealer;
• you want a fragrance-free, retinol-free eye cream that you can use morning and night;
• your eye area is comfortable now, with no itch, flaking or swelling.

Choose something else, or ask a clinician first, if:

• the skin around your eyes is dry, itchy, flaky or stinging: see menopausal skin suddenly sensitive, and pick an untinted cream from eye creams for mature skin;

• the tint looks grey, orange or chalky on your skin tone;
• you avoid parabens;

How to use it

Olay directs you to use it morning and evening on clean skin: massage a small amount under the eyes, at the outer corners and on the eyelids until absorbed, and avoid getting it in the eyes. On mature or newly sensitive skin, start more gently:

1. Patch test on the inner arm, then on a small area beside one eye, for a few days.
2. Start under the eyes and at the outer corners only. Add the eyelids if the first week is comfortable.
3. Use a rice-grain amount for both eyes. More product means more tint, not more effect.
4. In the morning, let it set before sunscreen and makeup. It is not a sunscreen; keep a daily SPF on the rest of your face.
5. Stop if it stings, itches or makes the eyelids red or puffy.

Does Olay Ultimate Eye Cream get rid of dark circles?

It makes them look lighter while you wear it, because of the tint. It does not remove them. Dark circles from thinning skin or hollows need a clinician if you want a lasting change.
