At a glance

Pick the eye cream by the cause of the dark circle. CeraVe Skin Renewing Eye Cream is the best pick for thin, dry skin with blue or purple tones and fine lines: it lists no fragrance and holds caffeine, niacinamide, ceramides and peptides. Brown circles point to CeraVe’s Vitamin C version. Hollows and shadows are not a cream job.

Dark circles can come from pigment, thin skin that lets vessels show, hollows that cast shadows, or puffiness, and often from more than one. The Cleveland Clinic says they usually are not a sign of a medical problem. These are researched picks from manufacturer labels, not wear-tested.

How to tell which circle you have

A 2016 review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology describes simple checks. They are a guide, not a diagnosis, and causes often overlap.

  1. Color. The review links brown to pigment and blue, pink or purple to vessels. The Cleveland Clinic says shade also depends on your natural skin tone.
  2. Stretch. Gently stretch the skin under your eye. Pigment keeps its look. Shadow improves or goes away. Vessel darkness spreads out without lightening.
  3. Light. The review says tear-trough shadow depends on the lighting. Compare a window with overhead light. A shadow shifts.

Brown circles: pigment

The Cleveland Clinic ties pigment to sun exposure and lists vitamin C creams among options that can lighten the look. The 2024 review of eye cream ingredients notes a lack of trials on eye-cream formulations. Expect slow, modest change.

Best pick for brown circles

CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Eye Cream

Key ingredients
Ascorbic acid (5% per the brand), ceramides, caffeine, hyaluronic acid
Best for
Brown circles on a dry eye area
Time of day
Twice a day, after cleansing
Fragrance
No fragrance listed; brand says fragrance-free
Watch out for
No study size for the brightening claim; caffeine amount not published

The US page directs use on the under-eye area, crow’s feet, eyelid and brow bone.

Premium option

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C Eye Cream

Key ingredients
Ascorbic acid (5% per the carton), shea butter, meadowfoam seed oil
Best for
Brown circles, if you prefer this brand
Time of day
Morning and/or evening
Fragrance
No fragrance listed; brand says fragrance free
Size
0.5 fl oz (15 ml), per the carton
Watch out for
Eyelid use not stated; no evidence it beats the CeraVe cream; can turn yellow in air

It was sold as Redermic C Eyes, and the carton says the formula is the same. The brand’s US page says very sensitive skin may want to introduce it gradually.

Blue or purple circles: thin skin and vessels

The Cleveland Clinic says skin under the eyes thins with age, so vessels show. Moisture comes first: the AAD says moisturizer can reduce the look of some fine lines. Brands add caffeine for dark circles, but the 2024 review cites one small study of 11 women using a 3% caffeine pad for a month.

Best pick for thin skin and fine lines

The brand page directs use on the under-eye area, crow’s feet, eyelid and brow bone. For peptides beside retinol, see our peptide guide.

Premium option

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG Eye Serum

Key ingredients
Caffeine (5% per the brand), EGCG, hyaluronic acid; also lactic acid, salicylic acid, benzyl alcohol
Best for
Blue or purple tones on skin that tolerates actives
Time of day
Morning and evening
Fragrance
No fragrance listed; no fragrance-free claim
Size
30 ml
Watch out for
Not a moisturizer; eyelid use not stated; brand advises a patch test

The brand page reports less visible dark circles at three weeks, from its own testing on 19 people over six weeks.

Hollows and shadows: what no cream does

The Cleveland Clinic says tear troughs, the hollows under the eyes, cast shadows. The 2016 review lists lasers, fillers and eyelid surgery for them, not creams. This page recommends none of those, and a clinician can explain the trade-offs. For now, cover the shade, and see our makeup page for a concealer.

Tinted mineral SPF

Colorescience Total Eye 3-in-1 Renewal Therapy SPF 35

Key ingredients
Titanium dioxide 7.9%, zinc oxide 6.7%, iron oxide tint
Best for
Daytime SPF with a peach tint over shadow
Time of day
Morning, before eye makeup
Fragrance
No fragrance listed; brand says fragrance-free
Size
0.23 fl oz (7 mL)
Watch out for
Brand says it is not a concealer; first use may tingle

The brand page directs use from under the eye to the brow, including eyelids. The AAD advises a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. See our sunscreens for dry skin.

Wrinkles too

Peptide or retinol? Choose by how much routine change you want to manage. The AAD says most products take at least six weeks to work, sometimes three months.

Route Pick Good fit Main limit
Moisture and peptides, no retinol CeraVe Skin Renewing Eye Cream (above) You want the simplest routine, or your skin is dry or touchy No published wrinkle-reduction amount
Gradual eye retinol RoC Retinol Correxion (below) Your skin is comfortable and you will start every other night Irritation; not for pregnancy

If cosmetic retinol irritates you, stop and simplify. For prescribed treatment, follow your prescriber’s advice. Persistent or worsening symptoms need qualified care, not a more expensive cream.

Lines and circles

RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream

Key ingredients
Retinol, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, panthenol, tocopherol
Best for
Fine lines and dark circles on comfortable skin
Time of day
Every other night to start; SPF 30 or higher in the morning
Fragrance
No fragrance listed
Size
15 mL / 0.5 fl oz
Watch out for
Irritation; not for use during pregnancy; strength not stated

The US page says to tap it along the orbital bone, not directly on the lash line. The AAD says to use retinoids only at night and notes people with dry skin may not be good candidates. See our retinol irritation guide.

Two others come up often. RoC Derm Correxion Eye Repair Dark Circle Cream has retinol, niacinamide and caffeine; its directions name the under-eye area only. The INKEY List Caffeine Eye Cream has 0.3% caffeine; its directions say to avoid applying too close to the eyelids or waterline. Our Eight Saints and No7 reviews say no cream changes dark circles.

Label check

Product Fragrance on the label Retinoid Caffeine Eyelid directions SPF
CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C None listed None Listed, amount not published Eyelid and brow bone None
La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C None listed None None listed Not stated; “eye area” None
CeraVe Skin Renewing Eye Cream None listed None Listed, amount not published Eyelid and brow bone None

Colorescience Total Eye None listed None None listed Under the eye to the brow, including eyelids SPF 35, mineral
RoC Retinol Correxion None listed Retinol None listed Not stated; “around the eye area” None

“None listed” means no fragrance or parfum entry appears in the list. Vitamin C and retinol can sting thin skin, so add one new product at a time. Formulas change, so read your pack.

When to see a clinician instead

The Cleveland Clinic says to call a provider about a dark circle or swelling under just one eye, or if dark circles persist. Its eye bags guide sends swelling lasting longer than 24 to 48 hours to an eye care professional. The American Academy of Ophthalmology advises an ophthalmologist for swelling that is painful, itchy or red. Treat a sudden change, or darkening that keeps getting worse, the same way.

Questions about eye cream for dark circles and wrinkles

Can dark circles be removed by eye cream?

Not fully, and not every type. A cream can lighten brown pigment slowly and moisturize thin skin, but it cannot fill a hollow.

What do dermatologists recommend for dark circles under eyes?

Dermatology sources start with sun protection, sleep, a cold compress and concealer; creams and in-office treatments come after.

What is the best eye cream for dark circles in people over 50?

Match the cream to the circle at any age. Thinner skin and hollows become more likely with age, so do the stretch check first. Brown points to the Vitamin C cream, blue or purple to CeraVe Skin Renewing Eye Cream.

Is vitamin C good for dark circles?

It can help brown circles, slowly, and it will not touch a hollow or visible vessels.

What vitamin are you lacking if you have dark circles?

A cream cannot tell you. The Cleveland Clinic names sun exposure, thinning skin, genetics and lack of sleep among causes. The NHS lists tiredness, breathlessness and unusually pale skin as main signs of iron deficiency anemia. See a GP if you think you have it.

What is the best under eye treatment for dark circles and wrinkles?

RoC Retinol Correxion is the one pick here aimed at both, if your skin tolerates retinol. Otherwise treat them separately: a moisturizing cream for lines and the pick that matches your circle.

Percentages, fragrance statements and test results are the brands’ own.
