At a glance
For dry, crepey-looking skin around the eyes, start with CeraVe Skin Renewing Eye Cream. It combines ceramides, niacinamide and caffeine, has no fragrance on its list, and its directions include the eyelid. If your skin is also easily irritated, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo is the Premium option. For fine lines, compare RoC Retinol Correxion. No cream lifts a drooping lid.
These are researched picks from manufacturer labels, not wear-tested. A 2024 review of eye cream ingredients notes a lack of clinical trials on finished eye creams, and the Cleveland Clinic says no one product fits everyone.

Label check: nine eye creams
Read from each brand’s US page on October 25, 2026. “None listed” means no fragrance or parfum entry appears in the list, not that a product will suit you. All but RoC Retinol Correxion and Revision D·E·J also carry a fragrance-free claim from the brand.
| Product | Fragrance | Retinoid | Caffeine (no amount given) | Eyelid directions | SPF |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CeraVe Skin Renewing | None listed | No | Yes | Yes: “eyelid, and brow bone” | No |
| CeraVe Eye Repair | None listed | No | No | Not stated: “around your eye area” | No |
| La Roche-Posay Dermallergo | None listed | No | No | Yes: “dry eyelids” | No |
| RoC Retinol Correxion | None listed | Retinol | No | Not stated: orbital bone, not the lash line | No |
| Kiehl’s Avocado | None listed | No | Yes | Not stated: “under eye and orbital bone area” | No |

| Revision D·E·J | None listed | No | No | Not stated: “around eye area” | No |
Only the two RoC products contain a retinoid. The Cleveland Clinic warns that strongly scented creams can irritate delicate eye skin.
Under the eye or on the lid
Use a product on the lid only when its own directions say so, and keep face retinols and acids off your lids. If an eye cosmetic irritates, the FDA says to stop it at once and see a doctor if irritation persists.
Best for dry, crepey-looking skin
CeraVe Skin Renewing Eye Cream
- Key ingredients
- Niacinamide, three ceramides, caffeine, two peptides, petrolatum
- Best for
- Dry, crepey-looking skin, lids included
- Time of day
- Morning and night
- Fragrance
- None listed; brand says fragrance-free
- Size
- 0.5 fl oz (15 mL)
- Watch out for
- Caffeine amount unpublished; nothing here lifts or tightens
CeraVe’s directions list the under-eye area, crow’s feet, eyelid and brow bone, and say to avoid direct eye contact. It asks little of your skin: no retinoid, exfoliating acid or SPF. Hydrated skin looks plumper, so lines show less, per the Cleveland Clinic.
Under-eye moisture
CeraVe Eye Repair Cream
- Key ingredients
- Niacinamide, three ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin
- Best for
- Dry under-eye skin, alone or under makeup
- Time of day
- Once or twice a day
- Fragrance
- None listed; brand says fragrance-free
- Watch out for
- Almond oil, aloe, plant extracts; eyelids not mentioned
The directions say small dots “around your eye area”. They do not mention the eyelids, so choose Skin Renewing for lid use. For layering under concealer, see our under-makeup guide.
Premium option
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Eye Cream
- Key ingredients
- Glycerin, squalane, shea butter, niacinamide
- Best for
- Dry, easily irritated skin, dry eyelids included
- Time of day
- Morning and/or evening
- Fragrance
- None listed; brand says made without fragrance
- Watch out for
- Shea butter, niacinamide; made for comfort, not lines
The directions say to “delicately dab around the eye area and on dry eyelids”. The brand claims allergy-prone testing, which does not guarantee it suits you. It costs more than the CeraVe creams, so choose it for the lid directions, not a stronger effect. A lid rash is a question for a clinician.
Retinol for fine lines
RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream
- Key ingredients
- Retinol, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, panthenol, tocopherol
- Best for
- Fine lines, on comfortable skin
- Time of day
- Every other night at first; SPF by day
- Fragrance
- None listed
- Size
- 0.5 fl oz (15 mL)
- Watch out for
- Irritation; retinol percentage unpublished; not for pregnancy
The AAD says people with allergies or dryness are probably not good candidates for a retinoid, and that retinoids should not be used during pregnancy. For the full retinol decision, see our wrinkles guide and retinol irritation guide.
Richer under-eye cream
Kiehl’s Avocado Eye Cream
- Key ingredients
- Squalane, avocado oil, shea butter, glycerin, caffeine
- Best for
- Dry under-eye skin wanting a richer cream
- Time of day
- Morning and night
- Fragrance
- None listed; brand says fragrance-free
- Size
- 0.5 fl oz (14 ml) or 0.95 fl oz (28 ml)
- Watch out for
- Soybean, sunflower, shea, rosemary extract; salicylic acid is listed
Kiehl’s directions point to the under-eye and orbital bone area and never mention the eyelid. The brand gives no role or percentage for the salicylic acid.
Hooded, sagging or crepey eyelids
For the full decision, including instant tighteners and when a drooping lid needs a clinician, see the best eye cream for hooded and sagging eyelids.
Three things get called droopy lids, and a cream touches one.
- Crepey lid skin is thin, lined and dry. A moisturizer can make it look smoother.
- Hooded lids are extra skin folding over the lid. The NHS calls lids that droop or get more hooded with age fairly common. No cream removes skin.
- Ptosis is the lid edge sitting low. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) says adult ptosis comes from aging or injury, when the lifting muscle stretches or separates from the lid.
Lifting claims are the brands’ own surveys. Kiehl’s reports 90% of 93 panelists saw the brow bone area lifted in eight weeks. RoC reports 90% of 31 subjects saw the eyelid lifted in two weeks with its Dual Eye Cream, by self-assessment. Neither measures a lifted lid. No cream lifts hooded skin or a low lid edge.
Five of the nine name the eyelid: CeraVe Skin Renewing, Dermallergo, Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective, Colorescience and RoC Dual, whose retinol gel goes on the lid and brow bone. Revision D·E·J is marketed for drooping lids, but its directions say only “around eye area” and the brand’s reply says to keep it off the lash line.
Premium option
Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Anti-Aging Eye Cream
- Key ingredients
- Niacinamide, caffeine, two peptides, hyaluronic acid, adenosine
- Best for
- Crepey, lined lids: texture, not droop
- Time of day
- Morning and night, before moisturizer
- Fragrance
- None listed; brand says fragrance-free
- Size
- 0.5 fl oz (14 ml) or 0.95 fl oz (28 ml)
- Watch out for
- Denatured alcohol listed sixth; costs more than CeraVe; no lift is proven
Kiehl’s says to apply half a pea-sized amount to the brow bone area, eyelid, outer corners and under-eye. Its 12-week clinical study of 96 panelists counted anyone who improved on at least one of several signs.
Daytime SPF for the eye area
Colorescience Total Eye 3-in-1 Renewal Therapy SPF 35
- Key ingredients
- Titanium dioxide 7.9%, zinc oxide 6.7%, tripeptide
- Best for
- Daytime sun protection, under eye to brow
- Time of day
- Morning, before eye makeup
- Fragrance
- None listed; brand says fragrance-free
- Size
- 0.23 fl oz (7 mL)
- Watch out for
- Tinted, four shades; first use may tingle
The brand says to smooth it “from undereye to brow, including eyelids”. It is an all-mineral sunscreen; the Cleveland Clinic calls sunscreen a must. The brand says it is not a concealer and not allergy-proof.
When to ask about eyelid surgery or see a clinician
See an eye doctor, not a skin-care counter, if:
- A lid droops suddenly, or your sight changes. The NHS lists both as urgent, and the Cleveland Clinic adds a lid suddenly closing, double vision or pain.
- Skin hangs over your lashes or blocks your view. The AAO lists vision-blocking skin, skin on the lashes and chronic dermatitis as reasons for upper-eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).
- The lid edge sits lower than it used to. The AAO says an ophthalmologist finds the cause and will likely recommend surgery.
- A swollen lid is red, hot or painful, which the NHS lists as urgent. Lid symptoms that are not improving also need a GP.
Surgery carries risks, and this page does not recommend it.

Questions about eye cream for mature skin
What is the best eye cream for a 50-year-old woman?
Start with a fragrance-free cream you will use daily, such as CeraVe Skin Renewing, and add retinol only if your skin is comfortable. Age guides: your 40s, 50s and 60s and 70s.
What does eye cream actually do?
It moisturizes thin skin, and hydrated skin shows lines less. Retinoids and caffeine have some study support, though the 2024 review notes a lack of trials on finished eye creams. It does not change fat pads, muscles or loose skin.
Can eye cream be used on the eyelids?
Only if the product’s directions say so. Lid skin is thin, as little as 0.2 mm in some people per the 2024 review. Five of the nine above name the eyelid; the other four do not.
Can CeraVe eye cream be used on eyelids?
CeraVe Skin Renewing can: its directions list the eyelid and brow bone. CeraVe Eye Repair’s directions say only “around your eye area”. Keep either out of your eyes.
Do eyelid tightening creams work?
They can smooth thin lid skin. They do not tighten loose skin or lift a hooded or drooping lid, and lifting percentages are the brands’ own surveys. Extra skin and ptosis are for an eye doctor.
Can hooded eyes get better with age?
Usually not; hooding tends to increase, as the NHS notes. Skin care can ease dryness and fine lines on the lid. If the fold blocks your view, ask an ophthalmologist.
Is there any under-eye cream that actually works?
A good one hydrates thin skin and softens the look of fine lines, and retinol may do more. Expect modest change over weeks. Hollows, fat-pad bags and loose skin need more.
