At a glance
CeraVe Skin Renewing Eye Cream is our best pick for bags and puffiness: caffeine in a fragrance-free ceramide cream that also moisturizes thin skin. Choose The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% (Premium option) for a caffeine serum that states its strength, or La Roche-Posay Redermic R Retinol Eye Cream if lines come with the puffiness. No cream is shown to shrink the fat pads behind true bags.
Puffy eyes have several causes, and only some respond to a cream. These are researched picks from manufacturer labels, not wear-tested.

What causes puffy eyes in the morning?
Fluid pools around the eyes while you lie flat, so puffiness is often worst on waking. Mayo Clinic names fluid retention, especially on waking or after a salty meal, plus lack of sleep, allergies, smoking and family history. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) adds dehydration and alcohol. With age, the tissue supporting the lids weakens, fat moves into the lower lids and fluid can collect there.
Hormones reach the eyes mostly as dryness, not puffy lids. The AAO says changing estrogen and progesterone levels can affect the eye’s oil glands, which can lead to dryness. See how menopause affects skin and skin that is suddenly sensitive.
What helps without a cream
- Cool compress. Sitting upright, rest a cool, damp washcloth around your eyes for a few minutes with light pressure. Cleveland Clinic says cold narrows blood vessels and reduces swelling.
- Head raised. Mayo Clinic and the AAO suggest an extra pillow, or a few inches under the head of the bed, so fluid does not settle overnight.
- Salt, fluids, alcohol. Limit salt and avoid fluids before bed. The AAO lists alcohol as a contributor.
- Sleep and smoking. Aim for seven to nine hours. The AAO says smoking thins the skin around the eyes.
- Allergies. Avoid triggers and rubbing your lids. The AAO says nonprescription antihistamines help, and feather pillows or pets on the bed can set off a reaction.
- Your products. Cleveland Clinic says fragrances, dyes and preservatives in eye products can irritate. If your lids keep swelling, stop them for a couple of weeks.
What a cream can and cannot do
Cleveland Clinic says the look of eye bags can sometimes improve with skin care containing caffeine, retinol or other puffiness-reducing ingredients, and calls these at-home measures temporary relief. The AAO also lists moisturizing the skin under the eyes.
The caffeine evidence is thinner than the marketing. A 2024 review in the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology says caffeine improves lower eyelid puffiness, but it cites a study of caffeine’s metabolic effects in humans and a study of an eye cream based on growth factors. The one caffeine study it describes, of a 3% pad used by 11 women for a month, reports pigmentation, not puffiness. The authors call the lack of trials on eye-cream formulations a notable limitation. Treat caffeine as plausible, not proven.
No cream is shown to move fat. Cleveland Clinic says bags from fat pads, bone structure or loose skin can be hard to correct without medical treatment, and Mayo Clinic says eyelid surgery may help persistent bags.

Also worth a look. For a cooling roller, see our No7 Firm & Bright review and its official page. Our Eight Saints All In review explains why its de-puffing claim is unproven.

When puffy eyes need a clinician
Most puffiness is harmless, but see a clinician for:
- Swelling longer than 24 to 48 hours. An ophthalmologist quoted by Cleveland Clinic says to see an eye care professional.
- Swelling that is red, hot, painful, tender or blistered. The NHS says to ask for urgent help. The AAO adds swelling that is itchy or does not go away.
- A lid that droops suddenly, or any change in eyesight. The NHS lists both as urgent. Mayo Clinic adds irritation, headaches or a rash.
- Bulging, or symptoms in one eye. With bulging eyes, Cleveland Clinic says symptoms in one eye, sudden bulging, pain, redness or double vision need prompt evaluation.
- Thyroid symptoms. Mayo Clinic lists thyroid eye disease among the causes of bags, and the AAO says it can cause bulging eyes. The NHS lists underactive and overactive thyroid symptoms, including tiredness, weight change, a neck swelling and a fast heartbeat.
Questions about puffy eyes
What is the best eye cream for depuffing?
CeraVe Skin Renewing Eye Cream for dry skin, or The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% (Premium option) if your eye area is not dry or reactive. No cream is proven to shrink bags, and any effect is temporary.
How do you get rid of puffy eyes in older age?
Treat the cause. Fluid puffiness responds to a cool compress, a raised head, less salt and allergy control. Fat in the lower lids does not, and a clinician can explain fillers, lasers or eyelid surgery.
What do dermatologists recommend for puffy under eyes?
We cite no dermatologist endorsement of any product here. A dermatology resident quoted by Cleveland Clinic advises against hemorrhoid cream near the eyes. Lasting bags go to a professional.
What is the best eye cream for puffy eyes over 50?
The pick follows dryness and lines, not age: CeraVe for dryness, La Roche-Posay Redermic R if you tolerate retinol. Our guide for your 50s has more.
How to get rid of bags under eyes at age 50?
Bags that stay all day often come from fat that has moved into the lower lids, which no cream is shown to remove. Mayo Clinic says eyelid surgery may help persistent or bothersome bags.
How to reduce progesterone puffiness?
A cream cannot change hormones. The free steps above target fluid around the eyes, and your clinician can discuss hormone questions. Sudden, one-sided or painful puffiness needs prompt advice.
