At a glance
If menopause has left your body skin dry or itchy, the body wash matters less than what it leaves out. Our first pick is Vanicream Gentle Body Wash: no fragrance, no sulfates, and a short ingredient list. Aveeno Skin Relief, fragrance-free, is the oat option. La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+ is the premium option, with shea butter and niacinamide, but it uses a sulfate cleanser.
A wash cannot fix dry skin by itself. What helps most is a short, warm shower and a fragrance-free moisturizer on damp skin straight after. If your current wash is comfortable and has no fragrance, you do not need to switch.

The three washes side by side
Ingredient facts come from each maker’s page or the retailer ingredient list named below, checked November 2, 2026. Your bottle’s label governs.
| Wash | Fragrance | Main cleansing ingredients | Stands out for | Who should skip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vanicream Gentle Body Wash | None; the label says free of fragrance and masking fragrance | Coco-glucoside, sodium cocoyl glycinate; sulfate-free | Fewest extras; National Eczema Association seal | Anyone who wants a wash that feels creamy or rich |
| Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash, fragrance-free | No added fragrance; Aveeno notes an ingredient odor | Cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoyl isethionate | Oat flour, oat extract and oat oil | Anyone who reacts to oat or to betaines |
| La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+ Gentle Foaming Moisturizing Wash | Label says fragrance-free; none listed | Sodium laureth sulfate, coco-betaine | Shea butter, niacinamide, glycerin; premium option | Anyone avoiding sulfates; the highest cost of the three |
Why the wash matters more after menopause
The NHS lists dry and itchy skin among menopause symptoms. Hot water, long showers and fragranced products can all make dry skin feel worse. The American Academy of Dermatology advises limiting showers and baths to five to ten minutes in warm water, patting skin dry, and applying a fragrance-free moisturizer straight away. It warns that “unscented” products can still contain masking fragrance.
That gives you three things to look for on the label:
- No fragrance or parfum, and no masking fragrance.
- The cleanser on the list. Sulfates such as sodium laureth sulfate foam strongly. If sulfate washes have felt tight or itchy on your skin before, look for glucoside or glycinate cleansers instead.
- No promise beyond cleaning. Any wash rinses off. Moisture comes from what you put on afterwards.
First pick: fragrance-free and sulfate-free
Vanicream Gentle Body Wash

Vanicream’s product page lists water, glycerin, coco-glucoside, propanediol, sodium cocoyl glycinate, panthenol and a few formula helpers. The bottle states it is free of dyes, fragrance, masking fragrance, lanolin, parabens and formaldehyde releasers, and that it is sulfate-free, betaine-free and gluten-free. It carries the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. The US bottle is 12 fl oz (355 ml).
- Why it is first: it removes the most common reasons a wash stings dry skin, and nothing else competes for attention on the label.
- Downside: it feels like a plain gel. If you want a wash that feels rich, this is not it.
- Note: mica and titanium dioxide are listed; they give the wash a pearly look and do nothing for skin.
Our Vanicream vs Dove Sensitive comparison explains why “sensitive” on a label does not mean fragrance-free.
Oat option
Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash, fragrance-free
The fragrance-free Skin Relief wash lists oat flour, oat extract and oat oil with cleansers including cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium cocoyl isethionate. Aveeno has acknowledged a reformulation and a natural ingredient smell, so a faint scent does not mean added perfume.
- Choose it if you like oat products and want a wash that is easy to find in most drugstores.
- Downside: it is not betaine-free, and a coconut-scented Skin Relief wash also exists. Check that the bottle says fragrance-free.
Our full Aveeno Skin Relief review covers the reformulation and the refill.
Premium option
La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+ Gentle Foaming Moisturizing Wash
The CVS ingredient list for the 13.5 oz wash, checked November 2, 2026, includes water, glycerin, sodium laureth sulfate, coco-betaine, niacinamide and shea butter. No fragrance is listed, and the bottle says fragrance-free. La Roche-Posay sells it as Lipikar Wash AP+ for dry to extra-dry skin on body and face, in a 400 ml (13.52 fl oz) pump with the National Eczema Association seal.
- Choose it if you want a foaming wash with shea butter and niacinamide, and your skin is fine with a sulfate cleanser.
- Downside: sodium laureth sulfate is the main cleanser, so on very dry or itchy skin we would try Vanicream first. It also costs the most of the three, and the niacinamide rinses off with the foam.
- Name check: the bottle says Gentle Foaming Moisturizing Wash, and the brand site calls it Lipikar Wash AP+. It is a different product from the Lipikar cleansing oil.
What about shower oils?
Shower oils feel richer and suit very dry skin for some people. The one we have reviewed, Bioderma Atoderm Shower Oil, lists fragrance, so it does not meet the fragrance-free rule above. Choose it only if you already know fragrance does not bother your skin.
A short shower routine for dry, itchy skin
- Keep it to five to ten minutes in warm, not hot, water.
- Use a small amount of wash.
- Skip scrubs and rough cloths on itchy areas.
- Pat dry and apply a fragrance-free body moisturizer while skin is still damp. See body lotions for menopause, urea lotions for rough legs and arms, or creams and lotions for itchy skin if itch is the main problem.
When it is not the wash
Itch that keeps you awake, a rash, broken skin or itch without any visible dryness needs a clinician, not a new body wash. Our guide to why menopause makes skin itch lists the other causes worth ruling out.
Questions before buying
Is body wash or bar soap better for dry skin?
The format matters less than the ingredients. Whatever you use, check for fragrance and keep showers short.
What does fragrance-free mean on a body wash?
It should mean no added fragrance and no masking fragrance. “Unscented” can still include masking fragrance, so read the ingredient list for fragrance or parfum.
Can I use these washes on my face?
La Roche-Posay labels Lipikar Wash AP+ for face and body. Vanicream and Aveeno market these washes for the body; for the face, see gentle cleansers for menopausal skin.
Do I still need lotion after a gentle wash?
Yes. No wash replaces a moisturizer. Apply one right after you pat dry.
Vanicream and Aveeno manufacturer pages and the CVS ingredient list for La Roche-Posay Lipikar Wash AP+ checked November 2, 2026. Read the label on your bottle, because formulas change.
