EltaMD PM Therapy vs CeraVe PM for dry menopausal skin
Quick picks
Check priceEltaMD PM Restore Moisturizer (formerly PM Therapy)
Best for: Lighter night step, fragrance-free
Downside: Not rich enough for very dry skin
At a glance
EltaMD PM Therapy is now sold as PM Restore. It is a fragrance-free night lotion that lists niacinamide, glycerin and hyaluronate, plus one ceramide-type ingredient, and no silicone. For dry menopausal skin it is a lighter night step, not a rich cream, and the night lotion we already list for that job is still CeraVe PM. This page is researched from the brands’ own ingredient lists and directions. We have not tested either lotion.
EltaMD now sells the product as EltaMD PM Restore Moisturizer, and the brand’s old PM Therapy product page no longer loads. Some retailers still use both names on one page. We compare it with CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, the lighter night lotion we already list.

The answer in one table
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Made for menopausal skin? | No. Neither lotion is. |
| Same product as PM Therapy? | EltaMD now sells it as PM Restore. Older retailer lists differ from the brand’s current one. |
| Fragrance? | Both brands say fragrance-free or free of added fragrance. Neither current list has a fragrance entry. |
| Ceramides? | PM Restore lists one ceramide-type ingredient and names no ceramide. CeraVe PM names three. |
| Rich enough for very dry skin? | Neither is a rich cream. Two independent reviews call PM Restore medium-weight or lightweight. |
| Which is better? | No head-to-head evidence exists, so we do not name a winner. |
PM Therapy or PM Restore? Match your box
EltaMD’s page, read October 24, 2026, uses the PM Restore name, and DermFND’s review does too. The ingredient list differs between sources, too. The brand’s current list does not include iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, a preservative that Dermstore’s page for the product still lists. Dermstore warns that its list has been updated and that the product you receive may differ.
So read the list on your own box, not only on a web page. If a preservative bothers your skin, check that first.
What the current brand list shows
- Fragrance: EltaMD calls it fragrance-free, a brand claim. The list has no fragrance, essential oil or named allergen, though fragrance-free is not the same as allergen-free.
- Niacinamide and glycerin: niacinamide is third and glycerin sixth. List order shows ranking, not amount. The American Academy of Dermatology says a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid or glycerin can be especially helpful in menopause.
- One ceramide-type ingredient: hydroxypropyl bispalmitamide MEA is 12th. The page says “a ceramide” without naming it, and its title reads “with Ceramides & Peptides,” but the list names no ceramide, such as ceramide NP, and does not use the word peptide. The nearest entry is hydrolyzed rice protein, 23rd.
- Emollients: an ester, ethylhexyl isononanoate, is second, plus four fatty acids. EltaMD calls the formula oil-free, which is its wording, not our finding.
- No silicone, three preservatives: no dimethicone, which CeraVe PM lists. The preservatives are phenoxyethanol, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate.
Brand claims, and how far they go
EltaMD says niacinamide and antioxidants help tone and texture, hyaluronic acid and a ceramide strengthen the moisture barrier, and rice protein stimulates “cell growth and collagen formation.” The page shows no study and no clinical numbers. Treat those as claims. CeraVe says its lotion gives continuous overnight hydration and helps restore the barrier, with no study cited either.
You may see EltaMD called “medical grade,” but the product page does not use that phrase. The FDA says “cosmeceutical” has no meaning under the law and that cosmetics are not intended to affect the body’s structure or function. “Medical grade” is not a defined cosmetic term either.
Is it rich enough for menopausal dry skin?
Sources disagree on texture. DermFND calls PM Restore medium-weight and says to skip it if you have very dry or mature skin that needs rich overnight hydration. Dermington’s review calls it a good choice for dryness and sensitivity and says dry winter skin may need a heavier layer. Allure labels it best for oily skin, while one menopause roundup calls it richer. We have not tested texture, so we treat it as lotion weight, as we treat CeraVe PM.
If a lotion is not enough, step up in this order:
- A cream. See the cream picks in our moisturizers for menopausal dry skin guide.
- EltaMD’s own step-up. Barrier Renewal Complex is labeled “good for mature skin” by the brand. The brand calls it fragrance-free. Its list names five ceramides and cholesterol, and also includes squalane, soybean oil and benzyl alcohol. The brand says it is “clinically proven” to moisturize within 24 hours, with no study size shown.
- A thin petrolatum layer. EltaMD Moisture Seal lists only petrolatum and paraffin. Follow its directions.
EltaMD PM Restore vs CeraVe PM, row by row
| Field | EltaMD PM Restore | CeraVe PM |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 1.7 oz (48 g) | 2 fl oz, as listed on cerave.com |
| Fragrance | Brand: fragrance-free. No fragrance entry. | Brand: free of added fragrance. No fragrance entry. |
| Ceramides | One ceramide-type ingredient, 12th | Three named: ceramide NP, AP and EOP, 7th to 9th |
| Niacinamide | 3rd | 4th |
| Glycerin | 6th | 2nd |
| Sodium hyaluronate | 26th | 15th |
| Silicone | None listed | Dimethicone, 11th |
| Preservatives | Phenoxyethanol, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate | Phenoxyethanol |
| Directions | “Apply daily on face after serum.” | “Apply liberally to the face and neck at night, or as directed by a physician.” |
Both brands call their lotions oil-free and non-comedogenic. CeraVe’s list also has an emollient, caprylic/capric triglyceride, so read oil-free as marketing wording.
Pick CeraVe PM if you want named ceramides and glycerin near the top. Pick PM Restore if you want a lotion with no silicone listed.
Using it with a retinoid
EltaMD’s page says nothing about retinoids. The AAD advises starting a retinoid slowly and using a moisturizer to ease irritation. DermFND, a third-party site, says PM Restore sits well beside one. Any plain, fragrance-free moisturizer can do this job, and both lotions fit. Ask your prescriber about timing with a prescription retinoid, and see our retinol irritation guide if stinging starts.
Who should skip each
Skip PM Restore if:
- your skin is very dry, itchy or cracking and needs a cream;
- you react to a preservative on your box’s list;
- you want named ceramides on the label;
Skip CeraVe PM if your skin is very dry, you prefer to avoid silicones, or you want one product for day and night, since it is directed for night.
PM Restore lists no sunscreen. EltaMD’s morning partner on this site is UV Physical SPF 41, a mineral-only, tinted, fragrance-free sunscreen that is not a moisturizer, so moisturize first.
Persistent itch, a rash or stinging that does not settle calls for a clinician. Start with menopausal skin suddenly sensitive, and stop any new product that burns.
Questions about EltaMD PM Restore and CeraVe PM
Is EltaMD PM Therapy the same as PM Restore?
Yes, EltaMD now sells it as PM Restore. Retailer lists differ, so read your box.
Is EltaMD PM Therapy good for menopausal dry skin?
It may help mild to moderate dryness as a lighter night step. Two independent reviews say very dry skin may need a heavier layer on top. It is not made for menopause or itch.
EltaMD PM Therapy or CeraVe PM: which is better for dry mature skin?
No head-to-head evidence exists, so we cannot name a winner. CeraVe names three ceramides. Both are lighter night steps.
Is EltaMD better than CeraVe?
Not as a rule. Premium pricing and brand claims are not evidence. Compare the lists.
Is EltaMD “medical grade”?
The product page does not use the phrase. The FDA says “cosmeceutical” has no legal meaning, and “medical grade” is not a defined cosmetic term.
Is EltaMD PM Restore fragrance-free?
EltaMD says so, and its current list has no fragrance entry.
Can I use EltaMD PM Restore with retinol?
The brand makes no statement. The AAD says a moisturizer can ease retinoid irritation. Ask your prescriber about a prescription retinoid.
What is the difference between CeraVe AM and PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion?
CeraVe sells a separate AM lotion with sunscreen (SPF 30 and SPF 50 versions are on cerave.com). This page covers only the PM lotion, which the brand directs for night. For the PM lotion against a richer cream, see CeraVe PM versus Skin Renewing Night Cream.
Can I use it in the morning?
The directions say daily after serum, but the name and description point to night. It lists no sunscreen, so you would still need a separate SPF.
What should I use if it is not rich enough?
A cream, Barrier Renewal Complex, or a thin petrolatum layer, as above.
The researched verdict
PM Restore is a fragrance-free night lotion with no silicone listed, niacinamide and one ceramide-type ingredient. Buy it if you prefer EltaMD and have mild dryness, not for itch or very dry skin. CeraVe PM does the same lighter job with named ceramides.
