EltaMD UV Physical SPF 41 review for menopausal skin

At a glance

EltaMD UV Physical SPF 41 is a lightly tinted, fragrance-free face sunscreen with only mineral filters (zinc oxide 9.0% and titanium dioxide 7.0%) and a 40-minute water-resistance rating. Of the three EltaMD face sunscreens we compared, it is the only one that is mineral-only and tinted, with the tint coming from iron oxides. It is not a moisturizer, it is not made for menopause, and the brand labels it for oily to normal skin. If your skin is dry, plan to moisturize underneath it.

The answer in one table

Question Short answer
Made for menopausal skin? No. It is a general mineral sunscreen.
Mineral or chemical filters? Mineral only: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
Fragrance? The brand calls it fragrance-free and no fragrance entry appears on the list.
Tint? Lightly tinted with iron oxides.
Moisturizing? Not a moisturizing formula. No glycerin, hyaluronic acid or ceramides are listed.
Water resistant? Yes, 40 minutes, per the tube label.

Why this one and not UV Daily or UV Clear

We compared three EltaMD face sunscreens on the brand’s own ingredient lists. The surprise is that two of them are not all-mineral.

UV Physical SPF 41 UV Daily SPF 40 UV Clear SPF 46
Active filters Zinc oxide 9.0%, titanium dioxide 7.0% Octinoxate 7.5%, zinc oxide 9.0% Octinoxate 7.5%, zinc oxide 9.0%
Moisture or skin-feel ingredients No moisturizers listed Hyaluronic acid, petrolatum Niacinamide 5%, hyaluronic acid
Tint Lightly tinted Untinted Untinted (a separate UV Clear Tinted exists)
Brand’s skin-type label Sensitive, oily to normal Normal, dry and combination Various skin types, acne-prone
Fragrance-free Yes Yes Yes
Water resistance 40 minutes Use a water-resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating Use a water-resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating

UV Daily is the one the brand points at dry skin, and its hyaluronic acid helps it feel more like a moisturizer. UV Clear adds niacinamide, which the brand links to blemishes and discoloration. Both pair zinc oxide with octinoxate, a chemical filter. We chose UV Physical because it is mineral-only, tinted, and the only one of the three with a water-resistance rating. If you tolerate chemical filters and your skin is dry, UV Daily is a fair alternative. EltaMD’s other mineral sunscreens, UV Restore and UV Skin Recovery, are a separate decision we have not reviewed here.

What the official ingredient list shows

EltaMD’s official product page, checked October 21, 2026, lists 9.0% zinc oxide and 7.0% titanium dioxide as actives. The inactive list starts with water, isopropyl palmitate, ethylhexyl stearate and octyldodecyl neopentanoate, then, among others, alumina, phenoxyethanol, hydrogen dimethicone and polyisobutene. Further down are tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), bisabolol, tocopherol, carnosine, ginger root extract and iron oxides.

  • Mineral filters only: no avobenzone, octinoxate or other chemical filters.
  • Iron oxides: they create the sheer tint. The AAD’s melasma self-care page recommends a tinted sunscreen that contains iron oxide, with SPF 30 or higher, because visible light can worsen melasma.
  • Light emollient esters, no humectants: it has no glycerin, hyaluronic acid or ceramides, and the AAD names hyaluronic acid and glycerin as helpful in menopause moisturizers.
  • Botanicals: ginger root extract is a plant extract. If you react to plant extracts, patch test it.
  • Label wording differs: the tube says “Lightly Tinted Formula for Oily to Normal Skin.” The product page says it is for sensitive and oily to normal skin.

Brand claims, and how far they go

EltaMD says the antioxidants and bisabolol help “calm the skin and visibly reduce redness,” that iron oxides “can help prevent the appearance of dark spots,” and that it is good for mature skin. The page cites no study for those points. Treat them as brand claims. What a sunscreen reliably does is reduce further sun damage. The AAD says sunscreen cannot thicken thinning skin but can help prevent further thinning, and that sun protection is part of melasma care. It will not fade existing melasma patches or treat redness by itself, and it is not a substitute for a diagnosis.

Is it a good sunscreen for mature skin?

It may suit you if:

  • your skin reacts to many products and you want a mineral-only sunscreen with a short, fragrance-free list;
  • you have dark patches and want an iron oxide tint, after checking with a dermatologist about the cause;
  • you want a sunscreen that wears alone or under makeup, and you will moisturize first.

Choose something else, or ask a clinician first, if:

Persistent rash, burning, or a spot that is changing deserves a qualified clinician.

Comparison: UV Physical SPF 41 or UV Daily SPF 40?

Quick comparison: tinted mineral or moisturizing sunscreen

EltaMD UV Physical Broad Spectrum SPF 41

3 oz, checked October 21, 2026.

Key ingredients
Zinc oxide 9.0%, titanium dioxide 7.0%; iron oxides, vitamin E, bisabolol, ginger root extract.
Best for
Skin that wants a mineral-only, tinted sunscreen; 40-minute water resistance.
Watch out for
Not moisturizing; labeled for oily to normal skin; the tint may not match every complexion.

EltaMD UV Daily Broad Spectrum SPF 40

1.7 oz, checked October 21, 2026.

Key ingredients
Octinoxate 7.5%, zinc oxide 9.0%; hyaluronic acid, petrolatum, vitamin E.
Best for
Normal to dry skin that tolerates a chemical filter and wants a lightweight moisturizing sunscreen.
Watch out for
Chemical filter; no water-resistance rating; the brand says it works best on fair or light skin tones.

Neither is established as better for menopausal skin. Neither mineral nor chemical filters make a sunscreen automatically right for everyone; pick the one you will apply generously every day.

How to use it more safely

Patch test on the inner arm for a few days. If your face is dry, apply a fragrance-free moisturizer first and let it settle. The AAD says to use at least 1 teaspoon for the face and to apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outside. Cover the neck and ears too. EltaMD’s directions say to apply liberally to the face and neck 15 minutes before sun exposure, reapply after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating, immediately after towel drying, and at least every two hours. The FDA notes there is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen, so “water resistant” is not all-day protection. Use shade, a hat and clothing as well. If layers roll or pill under it, see our SPF pilling checklist. For makeup layering, read moisturizers under makeup.

Questions before buying

Is EltaMD UV Physical good for dry menopausal skin?

It protects well, but it is not a moisturizing formula and the brand labels it for oily to normal skin. If your skin is dry, moisturize first, or compare a sunscreen with humectants in our dry-skin sunscreen guide.

Does the tint help with melasma or dark spots?

The AAD recommends a tinted sunscreen with iron oxide, SPF 30 or higher, as part of melasma care, and this one lists iron oxides. It will not fade existing patches. See a dermatologist to diagnose the cause.

Is mineral sunscreen better for sensitive skin?

Not automatically. Filter type alone does not decide it; ingredients, texture and how you apply it also matter. The No7 SPF review shows a fragranced chemical SPF for contrast.

Is it enough on its own?

Only if you apply the full amount and reapply. SPF 41 meets the AAD’s SPF 30 or higher advice for exposed skin, but a thin layer gives less protection than the number suggests.

The researched verdict

A well-matched sunscreen for readers who want mineral-only, fragrance-free protection with an iron oxide tint, with no built-in moisture. Buy it for protection and tint, not for hydration or for treating redness. If your skin is dry and not reactive, UV Daily or one of the sunscreens in our dry-skin guide may suit you better. If your concern is dark patches or persistent redness, see a dermatologist for the cause.
